Yay for first blog posts and My Weekly Scripture Power Series
Hello! I'm so excited to start this blog!
If you want to find out more about me, please go to my about page. I'm still figuring out this blog thing and how to work it, so things may change as I get settled. I just couldn't wait any longer to start writing. May we learn and grow together on this awesome adventure we call life!
I am a deeply religious person. I feel like we can find answers to a lot, if not all, of life's questions through the written and spoken word of God.
Elder Richard G. Scott, a Latter-day apostle of the Lord said, "We talk to God through prayer. He most often communicates back to us through His written word. To know what the voice of the Divine sounds like and feels like, read His words, study the scriptures, and ponder them. Make them an integral part of everyday life. If you want your children to recognize, understand, and act on the promptings of the Spirit, you must study the scriptures with them."
I love the scriptures and I always have. Sometimes I am really diligent in studying them with real intent. Other times, I go through the motions and I just read a verse or two each night because I know that is what I should do. Our scripture study with the girls, until recently has only been us reading to them at night. They hardly get much out of it, because half of the time they don't sit still long enough to really listen to the chapter.
Anyhow, our family scripture study needed improvement. I, as nurture I should/need to be, have started to take my role as spiritual teacher and guide to them a little more seriously. So, I decided to start doing scripture study in the morning.
And, then memorizing a scripture a week with them was born. Yes. Memorizing. My children are 6, 3, and 1. Children are smarter than we think. With practice they can learn one scripture a week. In turn I have built confidence in myself to memorize scriptures as well, something I didn't think was possible when I was younger (something about a terrible memory or something like that ;)).
We've been learning new scriptures each week for a couple of months now and the girls love it! I find it is a great way to teach them the gospel as well. They are young, but it is SO important to start teaching your children young. This will help them build a sure foundation on Jesus Christ so that when they are older and faced with temptations and trials, they can lean on that foundation and stay strong in the gospel.
In Alma 56:47-48 the story of the 2000 stripling warriors is told by Helaman, their commander. Helaman was concerned for them because they had never fought in a war before. But they did not fear death "and they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them. And they rehearsed unto me the words of their mothers, saying: We doubt not our mothers knew it."
My greatest desire is to be like the mothers of these faithful stripling warriors. When my daughters are older, I don't want them to doubt. I want them to say, "I do not doubt. My mother knew it and she taught me."
So each week I will post the scripture of the week that my family is learning. Feel free to use the same one we do, or if you do another, please share! I would love to hear what you do to teach your family the scriptures.
