"Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof;"
"all these to be used with aprudence and thanksgiving"(D&C 89).
I've mentioned the Word of Wisdom before, and I am going to mention it again. For those of you who don't know what the Word of Wisdom is, its modern day revelation given to the prophet Joseph Smith. The revelation states a kind of health code that promises if we follow it, we will be blessed with health, strength, and wisdom. I don't know about you, but I definitely want to have some of each of those!
In my ever continuing efforts to stay healthy (trust me, I struggle EVERY day with it, some chocolate is good, but I forget sometimes that moderation is key :), I look to the Word of Wisdom as a guide and reminder of how I should live. On one aspect I will focus today-we should eat every fruit and herb (meaning veggies, and fruits) in their season. I have made efforts this year to buy fruits and veggies when they are in season, and when they are in season only. I do this for many reasons:
They are fresher when they are in season
They are cheaper
Shakes things up a bit. Who wants to have the SAME meals ALL YEAR ROUND?
They are just better for you in their season, not off of a truck frozen from last season (did you know they do that?)
Yesterday I spent a good portion of my afternoon looking on Eatingwell.com (one of my favorite recipe websites btw) for recipes that have to do with fall. As I try them, I will share them. I am SUPER excited though! Yay for an excuse to try new recipes! I just have to, so that I can use the fruit and veggies in season. I guess I can sacrifice some of my time to make new recipes for the good of my family. Because, you know how much I hate trying new recipes. Just hate it. ;)
So keep on the lookout, because new recipes will be coming your way... like Roasted Pear-Butternut Soup, Sichuan Carrot Sou, Pueblo Pumpkin Stew (who doesn't like soup in the fall!?! I know I do!), Turkey and Leek Shepherd's Pie, Pear Risotto with Prosciutto (or bacon), and fried Sage leaves (YUM), Apple, Onion, and Cranberry Stuffing, Southwestern Stuffed Acorn Squash, and Squash and Leek Lasagna......to name a few.
What do you want me to try and share first??????
