SO exCiTEd!
Yes, that certainly is a picture of a hamburger bun! I FINALLY found a good hamburger bun recipe that was low in calories. I found a lot that tasted great, but I did not like the calorie content. These little babies are ONLY 144 calories a pop! It called for all purpose flour, but I used mostly whole wheat flour, and they turned out great. I've decided that I really don't like the taste of all-purpose flour-made things. Whole wheat just tastes better. Wahoo! I got the recipe off of allrecipes.com. That place is a gold mine I think! They tasted wonderful! I love allrecipes because you can have it recalculate the amounts of ingdredients depending on how many servings you want to make. For this recipe, it made 25, and I surely would not use 25 very fast, so I changed the amount to 12. The only problem with doing this is that the amounts are a little weird, but that is okay. I am willing to make them anyway! You'll see what I mean shortly...
Almost Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns
adapted from allrecipes.com
3/4 cup +3 tbs warm milk (see what I mean about weird?)
1 tbs + 2-3/4 tsp margarine, melted
1 tbs + 2 tsp water, warm
1 tbs honey (they used white sugar, I honey)
2 1/4 tsp yeast
1 tsp salt
2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 tbs dough enhancer
3 tsp vital wheat gluten
1. In a large bowl, stir together the milk, margarine, warm water, honey, and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes
2. Mix in salt and gradually stir in flour. Knead for 10 minutes. Divide into 12 pieces and form into balls. Place on baking sheets 2 to 3 in apart.
3. Let rise for 20 minutes to 1 hour (I did the one hour amount).
4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake for 15 minutes or until lightly golden brown on top.
144 calories per bun. SWEET! We had ours with homemade sloppy joe sauce last night! So good!
