New Healthy Goal
I've always wanted to do this, but have not really had the space or the time to do it, and I won't until I graduate-I want to have a garden. I think that is going to be my number one goal after graduating. Now you are probably thinking, Alisa, starting a garden in the middle of July is not great timing. I agree. That is why I will start by learning about gardening for the last half the year so I can be armed and ready to go when next season comes along.
I grew up with a garden, and there is just no way to have a tomato than home-grown. Its really not the same. And, homemade tomato soup made from home-grown tomatos-yummy in my tummy! Scott and I are going to start slow, by growing a few little pots of herbs-I love having fresh herbs, but they are so darn expensive at the store. Better news is, the seeds at the store are virtually the same price for organic ones. That is my main goal: grow an organic garden that we can mostly sustain ourselves on. That's the goal. Now, I realize that this is a all-happen-at-one-time goal, but what goal is? I think that having a garden will not only teach Scott and I to be hard workers (he already is, I am still working on it), as well as teach K and our future children to be hard workers. And, they will know how to garden. A family that works and plays together, stays together, right? I also want to start sooner than later, so that by the time K gets older it is something she is used to and that she will do, instead of trying to start something like that when she is a teenager. So, herb garden, and learning everything I can about gardening, this year (cilantro, parsely, and thyme, maybe rosemary-all my favorite herbs), and then maybe add a veggie each year. When we have our own place I will throw fruit trees into the mix, but that won't be until 10+ years down the road (whenever we get to stop moving).
The plan is to eat healthier, with the freshest ingredients I can fine, and what better way to do that then with a garden in your back yard! I can't wait to get started!
